Her debut appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup took place in the year 2011. Her efforts have helped in helping the U.S. team win consecutive Women's World Cup championships in 2015 and 2019. In 2018 she became cocaptain of the team. Rapinoe scored two goals as United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal game in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been prevented from attending the Olympics until 2021 due to COVID-19, a pandemic.
